INSIGHT
Retail media is moving beyond ecommerce banners. Physical stores, screens, first-party data and shopper context are turning retail environments into measurable media channels.

Retail media is often described as advertising sold by retailers, but that definition is becoming too narrow. The strongest retail media systems connect ecommerce, first-party shopper data, in-store screens, physical environments and measurement around a commercial moment: someone is close to making a purchase.
In 2026, IAB New Zealand’s retail media programme has brought together organisations including Foodstuffs Precision Media and Cartology NZ, reflecting how quickly the category is becoming part of mainstream media planning.
Most advertising tries to move a customer closer to a decision. Retail media often reaches them when the decision is already close. That changes the creative, the measurement and the commercial value of the impression.
A screen outside an Asian supermarket, for example, is not simply another DOOH placement. It combines a known physical environment, a high-intent shopping occasion and a specific audience profile.
Sponsored listings, onsite display, retailer apps, email and loyalty communications are the most familiar forms.
Entrance screens, digital signage, point-of-sale placements and shopping-centre media can extend retail media into the real world.
The long-term value comes from connecting exposure to outcomes such as store visits, category sales, basket behaviour or repeat purchase where privacy and data permissions allow.
Foot traffic alone is not enough. The best environments combine audience relevance, purchase context, dwell time, visibility and a credible link between the message and the customer journey.
For brands targeting Asian consumers in Auckland, this is especially useful because retail environments can sit at the intersection of culture, language, food, community and commerce. See our guide to marketing to Asian consumers in New Zealand for the broader audience context.
Retail media works best when the creative recognises where the customer is. Generic brand films often underperform compared with a simple message that fits the shopping mission: a product benefit, launch, promotion, proof point or clear call to action.
Retail media creates excitement because it can potentially connect advertising exposure more closely to commerce. But not every network has the same data, attribution or reporting capability. Buyers should ask what can genuinely be measured rather than assuming “closed loop” means perfect attribution.
